The Air Force Agency for Modeling and Simulation (AFAMS), in collaboration with the Central Florida Tech Grove, is conducting a prize challenge to help track immersive technologies and their training implementations to alleviate the Air Force’s personnel shortfalls.

Air Force officials have concluded that training efforts need faster development with improved quality. Immersive technologies, such as those based on virtual, augmented, mixed and extended realities, are key aspects in these efforts. AFAMS is exploring AI-driven solutions to improve its efficiency in scanning a constantly changing market for the latest developments in immersive tech, and to collect, identify and present them to decision-makers.

Toward this end, AFAMS has developed the Immersive Technology Planning Application (ITPA), a prototype knowledge management tool for training implementors throughout the Air Force, which provides recommendations for the use of immersive technology based on project criteria inputs. The ITPA is intended to be a concept demonstrator in conducting initial technology scans, investigating different technologies, and pursuing collaborative projects with various partners.

The goal is to create an AI-native application architecture for, and an initial prototype of, a new version of the AFAMS ITPA concept demonstrator. The ideal proposed solution performs automatic technology scans, gathers, catalogs and evaluates the data required for ITPA support, while also improving decision-making mechanisms that help end-users in tech planning efforts.

Judges will assess the submitted proposals based on innovation (the most heavily weighted category), feasibility, expansion and impact.

Semi-finalists will make pitches outlining their solutions lasting 20 to 30 minutes during a virtual event hosted by Tech Grove, Dec. 13.

Candidates who place first, second and third will receive $70,000, $50,000 and $30,000 in prize money, respectively.

The registration deadline for this challenge is Oct. 29. The proposal submission deadline is Nov. 12. Participants must satisfy both requirements to be eligible for consideration in the challenge.
