In today’s high-tech world, it is becoming more essential to establish and educate more tech-savvy students who can progress quickly up the ladder in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Air Force Agency for Modeling & Simulations (AFAMS) is encouraging today’s youth to ignite their imagination and creativity while exploring their future opportunities.
Last week AFAMS invited seventh and ninth grade students from Mater Academy Narcoossee to join a discussion on possible future paths in STEM fields and to conduct hands-on training with AFAMS Pilot Training Next (PTN) flight simulators at the Central Florida Tech Grove.
AFAMS team member Arnitra Davis coordinated this unique opportunity to help the young students learn more about the modeling and simulation industry, specifically at AFAMS, the Air Force and Team Orlando.
Throughout the day, the students had the opportunity to meet with Brett Telford, the new AFAMS deputy director; Capt. Patrick Boss, operations flight commander; a student cadet from the University of Central Florida Air Force ROTC program Detachment 159; and Emily Skerkow, the coordinator of the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) Team Orlando STEM outreach program.
The day continued with hands-on STEM activities led by Lindsey Spalding, director of DoD STARBASE Central Florida. DoD STARBASE Central Florida, one of the nation’s DoD STARBASE youth programs, provides innovative STEM education. Located in Research Park, this lab specializes in introducing students, teachers, and their families to the world of modeling, simulation and training (MS&T) through the lens of workforce development with partnerships between military, industry, government, and academia.
AFAMS’ efforts to encourage students to explore STEM possibilities is not only a great way to become more involved in the community, but it also acts as a guide to any students interested in future STEM careers.
