The U.S. Army Program Executive Office Simulation, Training and Instrumentation (PEO STRI) conducted a tabletop exchange to provide insights and ideas addressing key soldier training and challenges in collaboration with the Central Florida Tech Grove, Aug. 9.
“We want to more effectively evaluate and provide feedback on the performance of a soldier and squad,” said a spokesperson prior to the event. “We need to collect data on what each soldier and squad is doing, determine what was done correctly and incorrectly, and provide feedback to each soldier and squad about how they performed and how to perform better.”
Leading up to this event, attendees filled out a form that indicated areas of interest and were sorted into discussion groups based on their results. These areas of interest included soldier movement data collection, soldier weapon data collection, artificial intelligence (AI) agents for data analytics, and on-site audio/visual feedback. The groups developed solutions for two problems they received and presented them at the conclusion of the exchange.
“There is a lot of value in hosting events like these,” said Marwane Bahbaz, PEO STRI’s chief technology officer. “It’s a very innovative way to do market research. This interaction between traditional and nontraditional partners [who don’t usually do business with the government], particularly some smaller organizations I’d never heard of before, brings a new perspective which is really exciting.”
Chris Libutti, Tech Grove’s research program director, said that he was surprised by the variety of industry representation found in the crowd who participated.
“Today’s prompts were heavily focused on AI systems, so we were expecting everybody who showed up to be in the AI industry – that wasn’t the case,” Libutti said. “We had attendees from cyber companies, human performance companies, simulation, [extended reality], [virtual reality], [augmented reality] – all in all, a very diverse group of attendees.”
According to Libutti, the tabletop exchange and similar events fall into the core mission of the Tech Grove.
“Our core mission is to promote collaborations that lead to solutions outside of your normal acquisition process,” Libutti said. “This was our fourth tabletop exchange and our first with PEO STRI. We’re hoping to do more.”
