Since 2014, Electric Picture Display Systems (EPDS) has helped the Seafarers Harry Lundeberg School of Seamanship in Piney Point, Maryland, maintain and modernize the visual systems that support its full-mission bridge simulator.
The partnership has included the design and installation of a 360-degree projection system, a major visual-system upgrade and ongoing technical support to help maintain performance and availability for maritime training.
Affiliated with the Seafarers International Union (SIU), the school has trained mariners for careers at sea since 1967. In 2014, the school began replacing its legacy rear-projection trainer with a new full-mission bridge simulator.
EPDS designed and installed a 10-projector front-projection system using Digital Projection M-Vision LED projectors to deliver a continuous 360-degree visual display. The simulator entered service in January 2015.
In 2020, the school began a major visual-system upgrade to keep pace with evolving simulation technology and visualization requirements. Completed in mid-2021, the upgrade incorporated 4K visual content and 5,000-lumen projectors to enhance image resolution and display performance. EPDS collaborated with Scalable Display Technologies and Wärtsilä to implement the updated configuration.
After the upgrade, EPDS began providing scheduled maintenance to help keep the visual system performing as intended. Twice-yearly site visits include projector and lens cleaning, tuning of the Mantis night-blending system, updates to Scalable Display calibration and technical training for on-site personnel. EPDS also provides 24/7 remote technical assistance to support troubleshooting and help minimize system downtime.
The project illustrates how visual-system upgrades and ongoing technical support can extend the usefulness of a high-fidelity simulator. Through continued maintenance and calibration, EPDS helps the school sustain the visual performance needed to support maritime training.
