MetaCenter Global Week, a three-day event that is a partnership between Synapse Orlando and Immerse Global Summit, began its inaugural conference on Oct. 17 in Orlando, Florida, at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

MetaCenter features exhibits, panels and keynotes showcasing the latest innovations from a variety of tech companies from the Orlando area and beyond. MetaCenter started with opening comments from Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings and David Barilla, executive director for DDB/CRA.

Demings and Barilla began with a brief history of tech in Central Florida, which originated with a strong military presence, as well as the aerospace and space industries. The tech industry was later bolstered with the establishment of gaming and entertainment – particularly theme parks – in the local area.

“Orlando is one of the leading tech hubs and innovation centers in the world,” Barilla said. “Our growing ecosystem hasn’t stopped with downtown. In recent years, we, as a city, have invested in creating more space for tech companies to relocate and expand… the investment has been the catalyst for some of the world’s most innovative companies growing in our city.”

Demings went on to say that Central Florida has been recognized as the modeling, simulation and training (MS&T)capital of the world, and that over the past 60 years, billions of dollars have been invested to grow the ecosystem connecting infrastructure and specialized “centers of excellence.” According to Demings, in various fields such as aerospace, defense, education, healthcare and gaming, companies that represent Orange County’s simulation technology sector aredriving innovation that is now having a global impact.

“With Florida’s status already solidified as a launchpad of science and innovation, our investment in being first to market is uncompromised,” Demings said. “This area has one of the highest concentrations of Unity licenses in the country; this is because of the number of local companies working in MS&T as well as our world-class theme parks and attractions. Companies continue to flock to Orange County because it is the hub of talent and development.”

MetaCenter Global Week features a variety of learning and networking opportunities for MS&T and tech professionals, as well as social get-togethers for conference attendees. The conference continues through Oct. 19.
