The National Center for Simulation (NCS) brought 10 retired leaders from Team Orlando’s four military services together during its annual Former Commanders’ Meeting, Aug. 22.

The meetings honor past leaders and provide a forum for them to socialize and exchange information about current issues and trends that impact the modeling, simulation and training (MS&T) industry. NCS also uses the meetings to update these leaders on how it is contributing to the protection, promotion and growth of the industry, while also addressing how Florida’s state and local leaders can recognize and support the industry at local through national levels.

“The MS&T industry is strong, and it continues to be recognized by the State of Florida as one of the leading contributors to economic growth,” said George Cheros, NCS CEO. “With impact across the military and every industry sector, [our industry] is making an impact second only to the tourism industry.”

Neal Finkelstein, NCS chief operating officer, led the group in discussing the secure space that would enable small businesses to compete for secure contracts. Many of the former commanders shared insights on how NCS can assist academia and other community leaders in advancing this initiative.

“This is a great opportunity for our former commanders to remain involved,” said retired Navy Capt. Dan Covelli, who chairs the group of retired officers. Covelli is the former commander for the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division. “Leading a Team Orlando organization is one of the most rewarding assignments of our careers, and our investment in those organizations will always remain with us. We are grateful to NCS for the opportunity to participate.”

Cheros also acknowledged Waymon Armstrong, CEO of Engineering & Computer Simulations, for sponsoring the event and hosting it at the Country Club of Orlando.
