Spotlight Shumaker IST Dec 2010Dr. Shumaker is Director of the Institute for Simulation and Training (IST) at the University of Central Florida. With a staff of 250, IST is among the largest groups in the US focusing on research in modeling and simulation.

Prior assignments for Dr. Shumaker include Superintendent for Information Technology at the Naval Research Laboratory, Director of the Navy Center for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence, and Program Element Manager for aircraft technology at the Naval Air Systems Command. He has wide experience in computer science and computer engineering, with particular interest in human-computer interaction, adaptive systems, biomorphic computing, and software assurance.

Dr. Shumaker has lectured, taught and published on a wide variety of computing topic with particular focus on intelligent decision systems and human-agent interaction.

He holds a PhD in computer science from the University of Pennsylvania, a BSEE in electrical engineering and an MSE in computer engineering also from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Shumaker is a registered Professional Engineer, a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), a member of the IEEE Computer Society, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and Sigma Xi.
