Central Florida Tech Grove hosted a “Juice Bar” event that explored its strategic approach to designing prize challenges for addressing complex defense issues, April 23.
The session focused on fostering collaboration and encouraging the integration of commercial technologies into defense, as part of a broader initiative to explore structured methods for addressing challenges in the sector.
The event examined how prize challenges are being used as a mechanism to stimulate collaboration and promote the adoption of commercial technologies by the Department of Defense (DoD). Discussions centered on strategies for designing challenges that draw on diverse expertise from industry, academia, and startups.
Participants discussed how such initiatives aim to generate prototype solutions for national security applications. By involving a broad range of contributors—from small businesses to academic researchers, these efforts seek to encourage participation from non-traditional sources and accelerate the development of relevant technologies.
Tech Grove’s broader activities include workshops that explore future-oriented defense scenarios, such as the deployment of special operations forces in space by 2040. These workshops involve collaborative techniques like breakout sessions and whiteboarding to explore different aspects of the challenges. Some of the ideas developed in these workshops may lead to prize challenges designed to refine and test proposed solutions.
In addition to workshops, Tech Grove also facilitates “tabletop exchanges,” which are informal meetings focused on specific defense-related topics, such as emerging technologies or national security strategy. These sessions bring together government, industry, and academic participants to clarify problems and identify potential paths forward.
Another area of focus is interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly with creative and gaming professionals in the Orlando area. Events like game jams, where participants design video games to address specific challenges, are examples of how artistic and technical expertise can be integrated into applied problem-solving.
By convening participants from across sectors, Tech Grove serves as a forum for discussing and developing potential solutions to evolving defense needs.
