When Col. Thomas R. Monaghan Jr. arrived for his new project manager role at the PEO STRI in 2023, he was determined to leave a physical legacy in Project Manager Training Devices’ (PM TRADE) honor.
In this, the 50th year since PM TRADES’s inception, Monaghan chose to bring a piece of Army history to the home of PEO STRI and PM TRADE, the Naval Support Activity (NSA) Orlando command, to solidify the actions of the Army and the good done for the warfighter.
The M2A1 105 Howitzer cannon, an artillery piece utilized in WWII, will now sit on the lawn of PEO STRI, dedicated to PM TRADE’s full echelon of sustainable live and virtual training systems for our Soldiers. This howitzer, transferred from the National Infantry Museum at Fort Moore, Ga., will soon be permanently displayed at NSA Orlando as a symbol of the Army’s proud tradition.
Known for his fiery but friendly competitive spirit, Monaghan has organized pranks against his Navy colleagues during the yearly Army-Navy football games and encouraged the Navy skipper to participate in them.
He also is a devoted Philadelphia Eagles football fan and has attended PEO STRI Town Hall meetings dressed head to toe in Eagles garb, sporting Eagles camouflage on his face and shouting “E-A-G-L-E-S Eagles!”
Though focused on his mission, Monaghan is known to mix fun with his work. Besides dressing as an Eagles fan, pranking the Navy and delivering a howitzer to PEO STRI, he has created lively satirical PM TRADE videos to play at Town Hall meetings.
He is the 26th project manager for Training Devices (PM TRADE) at PEO STRI, leading a team of Army Soldiers and civilians in delivering world class training devices and training support capability to America’s warfighters. Monaghan has distinguished himself throughout his Army career. As project manager for Training Devices, he prioritized the delivery of sustainable live and virtual training solutions to America’s warfighters, ensuring their ability to maintain readiness and increase survivability, mobility and lethality. And, he had fun.
“As someone who has returned to PEO STRI for multiple assignments throughout my career, it has been my pleasure to experience the inner workings of the majority of the PM shops,” said Monaghan. “This has meant getting the opportunity to see the ins and outs of the diverse portfolio that STRI has created to serve our Soldiers, as well as work with so many great people. With PM TRADE being America’s first and oldest PM, there is something unique about serving as the leader of this team.”
Monaghan relinquishes his position later this week in a formal Change of Charter ceremony before departing for a new role within Army Acquisition at the Pentagon.
